The Mistake (Off-Campus #2)
As a fan of Elle Kennedy’s hockey romances, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on "The Mistake," the second book in the series. After giving the first book a natural 5-star rating, I had high expectations, and while it wasn’t perfect, it definitely delivered an enjoyable read.
Plot Overview
John Logan, one of the campus’s hockey stars, isn’t living the dream. Instead of basking in glory, he’s struggling with unrequited feelings for his best friend’s girlfriend. To escape this emotional turmoil, Logan dives into partying, alcohol, and casual flings. One night, while on his way to another party, he stumbles upon Grace, a quiet, pretty girl who prefers a cozy movie night over wild parties. What starts as an impromptu movie date ends in disappointment, but it leaves Logan thinking about his choices.
Grace, the quintessential good girl next door, always follows her father’s rules. She’s a diligent student, but she’s ready to break out of her shell and start living for herself, not just through her best friend and roommate.
My thoughts
The book starts off strong—engaging, entertaining, and full of humor and witty banter among friends. I absolutely adored Logan from the get-go. He’s fun, but his struggles cast a shadow over his carefree exterior. His journey isn’t just about finding love; it’s about grappling with his future and his responsibilities towards his family. Watching him grow and face these challenges was both heartbreaking and inspiring.
Grace, on the other hand, is as lovely as they come. She didn’t deserve the heartache that came her way, but she emerged stronger, and I admired her resilience. Her relationship with Logan and the dynamics with her father were particularly touching and brought me to tears more than once.
The Lull in the Middle
I have to admit, there was a point where the story started to drag. The initial excitement seemed to wane, and I found myself yearning for something more. Thankfully, the narrative picked up again towards the end, redeeming itself and leaving me satisfied with the overall experience.
Logan and Grace’s Chemistry
Logan and Grace make a great team, and their journey was fun to follow. However, they didn’t quite make it to my list of favorite couples. Garrett and Hannah still hold that top spot, and I’m eagerly looking forward to Dean’s story in the next book.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, "The Mistake" is a sweet and fun read, just as one would expect from a hockey rom-com. It kept me hooked even with the slight hitch in the middle of the book, which by the way, totally redeemed itself by the end. Logan’s growth, Grace’s resilience, and their combined journey make for a heartfelt and entertaining story. If you’re a fan of the genre, this book is definitely worth a read!
