A Thousand Boy-Kisses

A thousand boy kisses

When I picked up this book, I did so with a fair amount of skepticism. The book had been hyped up to the heavens, and I couldn't help but wonder if it would live up to its lofty reputation. Emotional impact was the buzzword surrounding this novel, and while it's not my usual genre, I can't resist a good tearjerker when I'm in the mood.

Initially, my doubts seemed justified. The story started off with an almost sickening sweetness—think sugar-coated fluff with extra sprinkles. However, that initial saccharine facade quickly gave way to a narrative that grabbed my heart and refused to let go. It wasn't long before the emotional freight train hit me, and I was utterly lost in the world Cole had crafted. The intensity of the emotions was palpable, and despite my initial misgivings, I found myself deeply invested.

The emotional damage this book inflicted was real, and I say that with a strange sense of appreciation. The story was magical, drawing me into its sad and weepy depths. Poppy, one of the main characters, was a bit too perfect in her acceptance of everything happening around her, and her unwavering faith felt a bit forced at times. In contrast, I found myself more connected to Ruhn's journey. His anger and angst resonated with me, especially considering he was just a teenager dealing with unimaginable circumstances. His initial anger and frustration gave way to a more mature understanding of the situation, and watching him grow into himself was both painful and beautiful.

However, I must admit I was slightly disappointed by the ending—not in the sense of how Poppy and Ruhn's story concluded, but more so with the resolution of Ruhn's personal journey. The conclusion was expected, beautiful, and heartbreakingly fitting for the narrative, but I felt there could have been more depth to Ruhn's ending.

Overall, "A Thousand Boy Kisses" is a heart-wrenching tale of young love, loss, and the magic that binds souls together. It delivers on its promise of emotional impact, leaving you both devastated and uplifted. The small details and the character growth fit perfectly within the framework of a heartbreaking YA romance/drama. Despite a few personal nitpicks, I don't regret picking this one up. If you're in the mood for a good cry and a beautifully tragic love story, this book is definitely worth a read.

In summary, this book will make you smile, cry, and feel a whirlwind of emotions. It's a testament to the power of love and the strength of the human spirit, wrapped up in a tale that's as sweet as it is sorrowful.
